BREAKING NEWS: Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake hits Leyte

CEBU CITY (6th Update) -- A shallow magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit Leyte province at 4:03 p.m. Thursday, July 6, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The Phivolcs said in its 4:32 p.m. advisory that the epicenter was located eight kilometers southwest of Jaro, Leyte, adding that the quake had a depth of two kilometers.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) also recorded it at 6.5 magnitude.

The tremor was felt at:
Intensity 5 - Tacloban City; Palo, Leyte; and Cebu City
Intensity 4 - Tolosa, Leyte; Sagay City, Negros Occidental; Burgos, Surigao del Norte
Intensity 3 - Bogo City, Cebu; Calatrava, Negros Occidental
Intensity 2 - Libjo, San Jose, Cagdianao, Dinagat Islands
Intensity 1 - Roxas City; La Carlota City; Negros Occidental

Phivolcs said the quake posed no tsunami threats, but damage and aftershocks are expected.

As of 5 p.m., there were no immediate reports of serious damage or casualties.

According to seismologists, shallow earthquakes generally cause more damage on the Earth's surface. Residents in the areas affected reported strong shaking.

In Cebu City, the tremor sent workers and students out of their offices and classrooms Thursday. Employees of the Mandaue City Hall also evacuated their building, while the Cebu Normal University suspended its afternoon classes.
